Cottrell's Cove: Located on Notre Dame Bay east of Cuttle's Island Cottrell's Cove may have been named after a pot bar known as a "cotteral", like Cottlesville (see New World Island) however, not all historians agree.
According to information presented in the ENL, it has been also known as Cuttle Cove, Cottle Cove, Cuttrel Cove, and Cotterell Cove. In 1845, ENL contributors noted that Cottrell's Cove was registered as Cottle Cove and it included one family of eight Protestant Episcopalian.
Brooks (2013) presented another possibility for the name of the community. Based on an interview with a local resident, he wrote:
a born and bred resident of Cottrell's Cove, Wallace Boone, had always felt that the town name originated from a corruption of the name Gasper Corte-Real, the Portuguese explorer.
More specifically, this applies to the Corte-Real part of the name, which is somewhat close to the sound and spelling of Cottrell. Since the Portuguese sailed the northeastern coast of Newfoundland, leaving the footprints of their language along the way, the speculation is possible.
Travelling in a northwesterly direction from St. John's there is Baie de las Gamas (Gambo), Ilha de Freyluis (Cape Freels), fuego (Fogo) and just next door to Cottrell's Cove Fortuna (Fortune Harbour).
Maybe Mr. Boon's conjecturing is accurate.
Most recent census results show a decreasing trend as is found in most remote areas: in 2016 there were 123 residents in Cottrell's Cove, down by 14.1% from the 144 recorded in 2011.
