Coomb's Cove: Located on the north side of Fortune Bay, east of Hermitage, the community that grew up in Coomb's Cove is now referred to as St. Jacques-Coombs Cove, obviously reflecting the fact that two communities were incorporated (in 1972) into one.
"It is said that a man by the name of "Coombs" lived there for about a year in the late 1700's. The English began settling in the area in the early 1700s"
Actually, the town consists of six distinct communities, with the motto "United but Unique". From East to west the communities are St. Jacques, English Harbour West, Mose Ambrose, Boxey, Coomb's Cove and Wreck Cove.
For many years they were not connected by road, each in its own little cove - the total distance from cast to west being 18.4 km (11.4 mi). Of course, the major way of travelling between the communities when they were first established was by boat until the road (Route 363) was built in the early 1960s.
The route now connects with Belleoram (Route 362) further to the cast and eventually the road connects with the road to the east to Pool's Cove (Rte. 362-10) and then north to Bay D'Espoire (Route 360), a distance of 27.6 km (17.1 mi).
The population of the amalgamated community, in 2016 was 588, which reflected a 4.9% decrease from the 618 enumerated in 2011.
