Cartyville: Established in the 1830 by a mixture of French fishermen, Cartyville in the beginning, was located at the mouth of the Robinson's River but as it grew in size, it grew inland, in part to be able to have easy access to the Railway system. With its move inland, agriculture became as important as fishing, and by the 1950s had become the largest potato growing area in Newfoundland.

Cartyville was named after the Hon. Michael H. Carty, an Irish lawyer who became the first member of Newfoundland Legislature for St. George's District. He held the position from 1882 until his defeat in 1893. He was re-elected in 1894, and served until 1897, when he became a member for Placentia-St. Mary's.

Not to be missed in Cartyville is the Legge Homestead, a Registered Heritage Structure. From the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador webpage comes the following descriptions:

The Legge Homestead has aesthetic value as an architectural rarity in the Bay St. George region. Its general massing and hip roof give the house a Georgian quality, but it is most certainly vernacular in its design.

Considering that it was built in the first decade of the twentieth century, it is a late version of a much earlier house type. Considering that the builder of the house had newly returned from living almost 20 years in England, this might explain why the house has many similarities to English cottage design.

The Legge Homestead has further aesthetic value due to its environmental setting. The house lies on a huge tract of flat land along the road leading to Cartyville beach. It is a well-known landmark in the region and is a vital component of its built landscape.
