Cape Ray: Located south of Cape Anguille, in the SW corner of the island, Cape Ray has a long history of varying "nomenclature".
In 1564 it appears on the map by Abraham Ortelius, an early Belgian cartographer, as c de Roi (The Cape of the King); others suggest, according to Hamilton (1996) that it may be "traced to the Basque Cap de Ray, Cap d'Array, or Cadarrayco hegoaco burua, for 'South Cape Ray".
He continued by writing that "in turn the Basque place name may have been inspired by the Portuguese Cabo do Rei 'Cape of the King".
After the turn of the century, it appears most commonly as c raye or Cape Ray, however regardless of its name it has been the site of many serious maritime disasters, one of the worst being the sinking of the Lady Sherbrooke in 1831 in which 350 lives were lost.
It was not until 1871, however, that the first lighthouse was erected.
