Newfoundland Tourism Region : Avalon
Calvert: Located only 72 km south of St. John's, this community was known as Caplin Bay or Capelin Bay after the fish of the same name.
According to local legend, Sir George Calvert, the First Baron Baltimore and founder of the early seventeenth century Colony of Avalon, at what is now nearby Ferryland, was searching for a lost cow when he stumbled upon the cove rich in capelins and so he named the cove after this important food source for the early settlers (Harding, 1998).
The first settlers were recorded to be in residence as early as 1670. According to Harding, the Portuguese were actually the first to name the community, as far back as 1504.
They called it Rio de Patas, which translates as Goose or Auk River. On January 30, 1922 the community of Capelin Bay was renamed because of duplication with other communities with a similar name, as Calvert in honour of Sir Calvert.
