Gushue's Pond: Located near Brigus Junction in the Avalon Peninsula, there are not many people who living in Canada today who do not recognize the name Gushue.
Bradley Raymond "Brad" Gushue is a Canadian curler, from Mount Pearl, NL who with his teammates Russ Howard, Mark Nichols, Jamie Korab and Mike Adams won Gold in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy by beating Finland in 10 to 4.
The original Gushue settlers were believed to come from Jersey in the Channel Islands. According to H.W. Le Messurier, an historian who was mentioned earlier, and who wrote at the turn of the 20th century about early relations between Newfoundland and the Channel Islands, "Gushue is a corruption of Guizot, the name of a well-known Jersey family.
As a proof that the Gushues were originally Guizots they can show a piece of plate with the name Guizot on it, which has been handed down for generations".
The area was first logged in the late 1800s by a man whose family name was Gushue (first name unknown). Originally from Bacon Cove in Conception Bay, he used the lumber he cut to build a schooner so that he could partake of the Labrador fishery.
