While there are few Beothuk place names in current use, archeological research efforts have uncovered over 100 sites where Beothuks lived.
Boyd's Cove, in Notre Dame Bay has been identified as a site of a Beothuk village that was occupied in the 17th and early 18th centuries.
Boyd's Cove Beothuk Site was designated a national historic site of Canada in 1995 and now has an excellent Beothuk Interpretation Centre open for the public.
A fishing-lumbering-farming settlement was settled in the late 1800s. There is no record of how the name was chosen for the cove, however, the family name of Boyd is not uncommon in the area.
The most well-known person was Rev. George Boyd (1847-1892) who served as a Methodist minister in the area from 1873 until his death.
The 2016 census showed that there were 183 people living in the cove, a drop of 3.7% from
2011.
