One theory is that Boxey got its name from the box-like wood that had to be cleared when people first arrived. Local lore has suggested that the community was settled in the early 1830's by the Blagdon brothers from Bay Le Jean (Bay L'Argent).
They had originally come to Newfoundland from Dover, England. According to one source, "two of these brothers owned boats, which were called "Jack Boats" at that time.
They would go out as far as the "Brunette Islands" to fish which were located about fifteen to sixteen miles away". At one time, Boxey was "a very busy place with a lobster factory, located on Stones Head and owned by the "Foote's" of Grand Bank".
But that wasn't the only industry. It was reported that while "most people made a living by shore fishing and bank fishing, ... some made a good living at Rum Running".
