Cape St. Francis: Located at the outer extremity marking the eastern boundary of Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula, the historian, M.F. Howley, according to information presented in the ENL maintained that the Cape was named by the Portuguese explorer Gaspar Corte Real.
The cape is on the south entrance of Conception Bay, only 22 km (14mi) north of St. John's.
While there are a number of saints who have the name "Francis" it is probably safe to assume that it was the world famous St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order who was born at Assisi in Umbria, Italy in 1181 whom the area commemorates
