Biscay Bay: Today Biscay Bay is known as a residential community east of Trepassey on the south-east end of the Avalon Peninsula. However, historians have found proof that "Biscayan Cove" (also known as Biscan Cove or Biskin Cove) as the water was known, was fished by French, Basque and Portuguese at the turn of the 16th Century.
Many of the original Basque fishermen actually came from the area known as Bay of Biscay, which lies along the western coast of France to the Spanish Border. It is most likely that those fishermen chose to apply that name to their new fishing area.
