According to Wikipedia contributors, St. George's Bay is also referred to as Bay St. George due to its original French name, Baie St. George.
While not the largest bay in Newfoundland, it still is quite large compared to many. The bay is approximately 60 km (37 mi) in length from the head of the bay at Stephenville Crossing to Cape St. George, located at the western tip of the Port au Port Peninsula, while the southern shore measures approximately 100 km (62 mi) from Stephenville Crossing to Cape Anguille.
At its widest, it is 64 kilometres (40 mi) wide, (i.e., between Cape Anguille in the south, and Cape St. George in the north). The majority of the towns that "face" the bay are on the northern shore in an area known as the Port au Port Peninsula (and as such are covered in the section on the Peninsula) on the southern shore many of the communities are part of the area known as the Codroy Valley and are covered under that section that discusses the immigration of Scottish settlers to the area.
