Bacon Cove: According to an article in Readers Digest, there are three possible origins of the "odd" name;
the first is that comes from settlers who bribed the pirate, Peter Easton, with pigs (one would assume the bribery was to keep him away from their settlement);
the second, is that originally it was "Beacon Cove" and somehow it morphed into Bacon Cove (a semi- plausible explanation);
and third, which is based on local legend, is that "a great ship that got caught in a sudden gale, resulting in its cargo of pigs being swept overboard.
The (apparently ravenous) residents were only too eager to help the swimming swine to shore-and into their frying pans. That's one way of welcoming new arrivals to town!"
According to the information presented in the ENL, Bacon Cove originally consisted of two settlements of Upper and Lower Bacon Cove until 1921, and that previous names were Horse Cove and Beacon Cove, "the latter perhaps referring to a light on the headland".
