Aspey Brook: According to information contained in the ENL, Aspey Brook is known locally as Apsey Brook, and that the name comes most likely from the aspen trees that grew near the brook.
It was first settled in the late 1800s when settlers move in to log and fish.
Regarding the name:
There is some confusion about the first census of the community as a contiguous community named Aspen Cove was located a few kilometres away next to Petley and of a similar size and nature to Aspey Brook.
An Aspey Point was first recorded on the Census of 1884 with a population of thirty-eight people; the community was predominantly Methodist (with some Church of England adherents) and engaged in lumbering, fishing and mining, probably at the Britannia slate quarries which operated from 1865 to 1909.
Both Aspen Cove and Aspen Point are shown on the Census of 1891 with thirty-three and forty-nine inhabitants respectively and in 1901 Aspey Brook, with a population of forty-five and Aspen Cove with a population of twenty-one, are recorded.
