Argentia: Settled in the 1600s by French fishermen, Argentia it was originally known as Petit Plaisance (Pleasant Little Place), and later anglicized to Little Placentia.
The area was renamed Argentia, after argentum, the Latin word meaning "silver", when a lead-silver mine was opened in the area circa 1900. Unfortunately, the mine closed not that many years later in 1925.
Argentia is now a commercial seaport and industrial park, located within the Town of Placentia.
Many tourists to the island know the seaport as it is one of the two locations in which ferries arrive from the mainland (the other being Channel Port-aux-Basque).
